Although it is not necessary to send a funeral thank you note, you might feel it is appropriate to send thank you notes to those who have shown you special support, encouragement or assistance during your time of loss.

However, during this difficult time and grieving process, a thank you note is not expected from the grief-stricken. It can be helpful to you for the healing process to write your thoughts and express gratitude to those who have been a comfort to you.

It is not always easy to find the right words or know what to write in funeral cards after experiencing the loss of a loved one, so we have created this page to help you select words you might want to include in a funeral thank you note. Here is a list of people you might want to consider sending thank you’s:

• Anyone who has sent flowers, donations, gifts or cards

• The officiant of the funeral or memorial service

• Friends, family, or loved ones who have assisted you in the funeral service which may include–      Pallbearers, meal preparation, babysitting, provided funeral music, or assisted you beyond measure

Examples of Funeral Thank You Notes

Writing a brief note is perfectly fine, you can constrain it to a few sentences without feeling an obligation to write a whole letter. Below are some examples of what you might write in a thank you note:

Dear John,
Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers during our time of loss. It is comforting to know friends, like yourself are near and caring. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Dear Jane,
The beautiful flowers that you sent are beautiful and we just want to thank you for your thoughtfulness during a very difficult time. Your encouragement is greatly appreicated. Thank again.

It can be helpful to ask a friend or family member assist you in writing thank you notes, if you have many to send out or feel that you need additional support in doing so.
