It is always appropriate to play some sort of music in a funeral or memorial ceremony. It can add to the overall theme or mood of the service and has been known to soothe a mourning spirit. Always try and select songs that were favorites to the deceased or held some sort of meaning to them. In this way, you will personalize the service in a way that is a nice tribute to them.

Funeral songs do not necessarily have to be spiritual in nature or even labeled as a "funeral song". It certainly can be from any type of music selection from Classical to Rock 'n Roll. At my Aunt's funeral service, they played Elvis Presley's music intermittently through the service. It was very appropriate because she was a big Elvis fan all her life. It was an extension of who she was and it was very appropriate.

So although it may not seem like an appropriate song at first, consider whether or not it had some meaning. There are some songs that we hear that bring our memories back to whatever event or person it reminds us of. Music can do that to people and often the choice of funerla songs will bring back happy and cherished memories to the bereaved family.  You can purchase them online via iTunes if you would like to create a CD of a variety of songs.

There are even funeral music CDs that are instrumental that would serve as a good background music for prelude and postlude in the ceremony.  Almost all of the songs below are searchable online and you will be able to hear them. Make a list of songs that your loved one enjoyed listening to and then consider incorporating it into the service.
