Relating death to religious teachings is just one purpose of a funeral service, because of this many choose to have a humanist ceremony in its place. During this type of service, family and friends gather to acknowledge the death, offer support to each other and express their grief. Sometimes the family may choose to have a member of the clergy to officiate but without religious overtones. The service ceremony includes funeral music, group singing, and funeral scripture readings of poetry or literature from various writers that may have held some special meaning by the deceased.
